CONFERENCE OVERVIEW 

Friday, Oct. 19th: 

Please join us for a BUGS kick off mixer at the Hayti Heritage Center, 804 Old Fayetteville St, Durham, NC 27701 from 6-10pm. Please note: this is a fundraiser and kickoff event for the 2018 BUGS conference. Join us as we also celebrate the 35th anniversary of an incredible organization, Land Loss Prevention Project!  All are welcome!

 

Saturday, Oct. 20th

Registration: 8am (T-shirts will be available for sale)

Location: BN Duke Auditorium, North Carolina Central University, 1851 Fayetteville Street, Durham, NC 27707

 

Please note: as mentioned before, unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances, we are not able to host child care this year. However, ALL CHILDREN ARE WELCOME with their care givers. Please make sure to contribute to the beautiful space we create to make sure ALL of our people are welcome, including and especially young people.

 

Please also note: Reminder to stay hydrated and take care of yourselves and each other. With that, reminder to please bring a water bottle to fill up with water because we will not be distributing (corporate, privatized) bottled water. 

 

Program begins promptly at 9am on Saturday featuring the BRILLIANT Dr. Monica White as our morning keynote speaker. Location: BN Duke Auditorium, NCCU, followed by exciting workshops then lunch and more dope workshops.  LUNCH: WG Pearson Cafeteria (with lunch time meet ups in the Farrison Comms Building).

 

 

We will resume back in the BN Duke Auditorium PROMPTLY at 4:30pm to hear our BRILLIANT radical Black farmer comrade Leah Penniman of Soul Fire farm give the final keynote. Stay after to hear Leah and Dr. White in conversation, facilitated by Detroit Black Community Food Security Network's Malik Yakini. Leah will stay after to sign books for her newly released "Farming While Black" book which is hot off the press JUST in time to be released for BUGS!  Book signing (with books availab le for sale) will begin at 5:30pm. 

 

Saturday, Oct. 20th EVENING: BUGS After Party at the VAULT!

Time: 8pm - midnight

Join BUGS conference attendees for a fundraiser and after party at the Vault, 1104 Broad St., Durham, NC 27705.

Join us as we listen to the live reggae sounds of "Black Earth Guardians" (featuring some surprise BUGS participants!), raffle, drinks, food, a dj and more.   PLEASE NOTE: NO ONE TURNED AWAY FOR LACK OF FUNDS. 

 

Sunday, Oct. 21st (Please note: Black only space)

Time: 9am

Location: BN Duke Auditorium 

Sunday will focus on land justice and action planning. We will feature an intergenerational panel featuring local farmers from North Carolina discussing land strategies followed by a presentation by Land Loss Prevention Project and their new report leading into the National Black Food and Justice Alliance leading an interactive session on our collective national movement building work around land protection and preservation.
